Tata Motors has announced that the mother plant for the Nano will be relocated to Sanand in Gujarat.

The company had received overwhelming support from several states for relocating the plant. SUV sales are down this year, every automaker that relies on SUVs is having a bad year. Tata’s newly acquired Land Rover brand could be the lone exception – with sales only down 3 percent this year – but the Indian automaker is safeguarding against a bigger market slump by cutting Land Rover production.

Despite only a 3 percent overall drop in sales, Land Rover sales are actually down by more than 30 percent in the U.S. and an equally large number in Europe. Tata is removing two shifts from Land Rover’s Solihull plant located in India. In addition, Tata will also be laying off 300 workers from its Halewood plant where the Jaguar X-Type is produced.

Alfa Romeo is planning a successor to the 166 with a new large sedan that will be based on a rear-wheel-drive architecture. The new large sedan will become the flagship model of the Alfa Romeo lineup and will follow the naming model policy instead of numbering models.
