The 87th Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has a new world record holder today – the Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe. World Champion driver Rhys Millen piloted the Genesis Coupe to his ninth overall class title, breaking one of his two world records in 17 trips to the Hill Climb.

“Driving the Genesis Coupe for the first time at Pikes Peak in front of thousands of fans is an amazing experience,” said Millen. “Nothing compares to the pressure and thrill of Pikes Peak while competing against yourself for the record.”

Millen set the record time of 12 minutes, 9 seconds (12:09.397) more than 1 minute and 23 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the rear-wheel-drive Time Attack Class. At the finish line on the summit of Pikes Peak, Millen reported that the car that never skipped a beat, no matter how hard he challenged the diverse terrain and high altitude, and finished with both rear tires down to steel belts. Millen utilized the Genesis Coupe’s rear-drive layout to its full potential, power-sliding his Genesis Coupe mere inches away from guard rails, trees and 2,000-foot cliffs, while besting his own record of 12 minutes, 31.61 seconds by 22 seconds. …click here to read more

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, began taking pre-launch orders for its Elantra LPI Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), its first hybrid vehicle for commercial sale.

Hyundai will accept pre-launch orders until July 7, a day before it officially introduces the car in the South Korean domestic market. The car, which is the world’s first hybrid electric vehicle to be powered by a Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) engine, was first unveiled at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show in April. To be sold under the Avante badge in Korea, the LPI HEV will ensure eco-friendliness as well as economical operating costs and differentiated design.

Powered by an LPI ‘Gamma’ engine displacing 1.6 litres, a 15 kW (105 Nm) electric motor and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Elantra LPI HEV emits just 99 g / km of CO2 and 90 percent fewer emissions than an equivalent standard 1.6 litre petrol powered Elantra to qualify as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), often referred to as auto gas, is a low carbon emitting hydrocarbon fuel which burns more cleanly than petrol or Diesel. …click here to read more

“Simply smoking.” These are the exact words that John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai USA, used to describe early sales of the new Genesis Coupe during a recent interview. The highly-anticipated two-door coupe is selling better than the Genesis Sedan, which arrived on the scene last year, even though Hyundai has focused advertising with the larger luxury sedan. …click here to read more

With the release of the new Hyundai Genesis coupe it was only a matter of time that the tuning companies got their mad scientists to start developing specialy parts. Above is a clean example from Team Zenon, nothing more than a simple aero package and some quality BBS wheels.

It should only be a matter of time before we start seeing after market turbo kits, etc for the new coupe. Hyundai is really starting to step up the design of their vehicles.
