General Motors’ OnStar in-car information service can already automatically slow down a stolen vehicle, as well as monitor traffic situations in real time. Now, GM has upgraded the functionality of OnStar to electronically transmit a vehicle’s precise latitude and longitude directly to 911 dispatch during emergency calls.

With the new system in place, emergency service response times will be quicker, and thanks to the electronic system the location will be precise. Using GPS, the new service identifies street names, cross streets and precise x-y coordinates of an emergency call so that help is immediately dispatched to the exact location.

For example, OnStar’s automatic crash response system uses built-in vehicle sensors to contact OnStar after a crash. The sensors provide real-time data about the type and severity of the crash to OnStar, and the system can relay data such as the number, direction and severity of impacts as well as air bag deployment status to emergency responders so they can be better prepared to help when they arrive at the scene.

The gaming industry – a sector that can deservedly adorn itself with attributes such as visionary creativity, innovation and progressiveness. Porsche Design announced a new phone in its 9000 series of communications products, the P’9522.

This new phone in Porsche Designs lineup, the P’9522 is a one-piece ‘candybar’ style unit, with a case machined from a single piece of aluminum. Some core features, beyond the elegant and minimalist design, are the 2.8in touchscreen active matrix organic light-emitting diode display, fingerprint recognition and built-in GPS with navigation functionality.

A five megapixel camera, MP3 player and WiFi access are also built into the quad-band global phone. However if you are in Japan or Korea, the phone will not work due to incompatibilities with those countries’ networks.

Automakers are becoming aware of the influence video games are starting to have on the buying habits of new car buyers. According to a new report from Carleton University in Canada, video games have become as pervasive as movies. The study also claims that being able to race with a particular car in a game will have a stronger affect on an individual’s desire to purchase that car than if they simply watched a television advertisement for it.

The researchers found that playing the game significantly increased a player’s attitude along with brand loyalty. Clearly this demonstrate that interactivity is a powerful way to connect customers to brands.

Confirmed: Sirius XM Price Hike

Satellite radio has quickly become one of the most checked option boxes at the dealership, but starting on March 11th, that option will cost buyers a little more. It’s been rumored for some time now that newly minted Sirius XM was planning a price hike, and the lone satellite radio provider confirmed that rumor earlier on Wednesday.

Although no one really likes to see higher prices, Sirius XM’s price hike is nothing to get in a tizzy over. For the average listener that has one radio and doesn’t use the online listening feature, nothing will change. However, if you have multiple radios and like to listen online, be ready for a slight bump in your subscription fees.

Beginning March 11th, Sirius XM will be raising the monthly subscription fee for extra radios to $8.99, an increase of $2 per month. The new pricing scheme also eliminates the now-free online radio stream. Sirius XM subscribers wanting to listen online will now have to pay a monthly fee of $2.95.
The extra cash shouldn’t be too much of a burden on the average subscriber, but Sirius XM is hoping the slight bump will help cancel out some of its outstanding debt. However, if you’re worried about the extra two bucks a month, you can lock in current prices for up to three years if you act before March 11th.
